This Saturday is Valentine’s Day – and if you’ve left it late this year, the supermarkets have you covered. From easy gifts to dinner ideas and treats, there’s still time to pop in before the big day arrives.
Say it with a gift…
Boxed chocolates & sweets and heart-themed gifts can be picked up in any major supermarket in the UK this week. Buying your partner their favourite chocolates or sweets may seem like an easy option, but it’s also a way to show that you know what they really like.
Pick up a 24-piece box of Ferrero Rocher for a truly classic option, or for a classic with a newer twist, go for Guylian Love Praliné Hearts in their heart-shaped box.
For a fun sweet treat, Asda’s “You’re Clawsome” solid milk chocolate lobsters, M&S “You tickle my pickle” milk chocolate pickles and Lidl’s chocolate rose may fit the bill.
When it comes to non-edible gifts, Aldi is offering a range of sweet-scented candles, Tesco has gorgeous heart-print PJs, and these heart coupe glasses from M&S are super-stylish.
You’ll be able to pick up bouquets of flowers and live plants in all the major supermarkets – and in all honesty, picking up flowers in-store may be easier and cheaper this late on, especially if florists’ delivery slots are all booked up.
A romantic night in…
As ever, many of the supermarkets are offering Valentine’s Day dine-in meal deals that let you build a restaurant-style three-course dinner for two at home.
By far the most affordable is Aldi’s pick-and-mix selection, where, if you choose the cheapest options, you can enjoy a themed starter, main and dessert for two for £5.47. Lidl’s offering includes heart-shaped chicken nuggets, great if you’re sharing the day with your kids, while at Co-Op, you can pick up a main, two sides and a bottle of fizz for just £10.
Asda’s £12 deal includes a starter, main, two sides, dessert and drink, while at Morrisons, a starter, main, side, dessert and drink for two will set you back just £15.
With a Nectar card you can buy a starter, main, side, dessert and alcoholic drink for £18 at Sainsbury’s. Tesco’s offering, meanwhile, comes with an additional side and will cost you £20.
Unsurprisingly, Waitrose and M&S come in as the priciest of the bunch, with both of their Valentine’s Day meal deals priced at £25 for two. At M&S the choices include a wagyu beef pie, Coquilles St Jacques and a fillet steak Beef Wellington, while at Waitrose the selection features garlic butter-roasted scallops and king prawns, sea bass with gremolata butter and ruby chocolate & raspberry mousses.
Planning on doing breakfast or brunch rather than dinner? Then look out for Asda’s heart-shaped doughnuts, Waitrose’s heart-shaped crumpets or Tesco’s pink and red heart sprinkles if you plan to do some Valentine’s Day baking.
Whatever your budget and tastes, the supermarkets have you covered for food, drink and gifts this Valentine’s Day. What are your plans?
