Thursday, March 5th is World Book Day – and it’s about so much more than just dressing up for school. It’s a day to celebrate the written word, spark children’s imaginations and bring their favourite books to life in creative ways…which could include the medium of food.

This year, why not turn mealtimes and snacks into magical moments inspired by their favourite characters and tales?

Bring stories to the breakfast table

Start their day with a nod to a classic tale. A bowl of Goldilocks’ porridge is a simple but delicious and filling way to ease into the celebrations. Set up a mini toppings station with things like berries, honey, cinnamon and more, so children can decide for themselves what’s “just right”.

Scrambled eggs could represent the “scrambled snake” from The Gruffalo, or why not try making a line of mini pancakes to resemble The Very Hungry Caterpillar?

Themed lunchboxes inspired by favourite books

Feeling creative? Go all-out with this year’s lunchbox themes!

Harry Potter fans may enjoy a pumpkin pasty alongside golden snitch cake pops, cheese and cracker spell books and homemade butter beer.

A Paddington Bear picnic box is simple, with a marmalade sandwich, mini scones, blueberries and a carton of orange juice labelled with the words, “Peru’s finest”.

Fans of The Cat In The Hat are easy to cater for with a red and white striped theme: skewered strawberries and marshmallows, red apple slices paired with white cheese cubes, or red velvet cupcakes with white frosting.

Turn dinner into a storytelling event

Don’t let the fun stop after school! Transform the evening meal into a book-inspired feast. Host a mini Mad Hatter’s tea party with sandwiches and colourful drinks, a chaotic tea from The Tiger Who Came To Tea, or a picnic from The Famous Five, complete, of course, with “lashings of ginger beer”.

The meat pie from Danny The Champion Of The World, the contents of the luncheon basket from The Wind In The Willows or even homemade pizzas in the shape of favourite characters can all work. Encourage your child to help with the preparation and cooking, talking about their favourite characters or scenes…and don’t forget to end with a sweet treat – Bruce Bogtrotter’s cake, if you’re feeling indulgent!

Don’t forget the finishing touches!

Once the themed treats are sorted, it’s time to accessorise. Costumes are always exciting, but the little details can also help to bring a book or character to life. Book-themed pins, badges and keyrings are perfect for adding personality without the pressure of a full outfit.

Pawprint Family also offers a lovely World Book Day collection filled with book-inspired accessories, perfect for adding those final touches once the themed treats are sorted. Whether your child wants something subtle for their school jumper or a keepsake to treasure long after the day is over, their range makes it easy to celebrate in style.

Make it personal

One of the most important things to do on World Book Day is to let your child take the lead. Which book or character do they want to celebrate? Is it a classic? A new favourite? A series they can’t put down? Build the day around that story.

World Book Day doesn’t have to be stressful or expensive. With a little imagination – and maybe a slice of chocolate cake, too – you can turn favourite books into edible adventures for the whole family to enjoy.
