On Friday, May 31st, Mary-Jane’s Coffee – a coffee shop with a difference – will be opening on Whiteladies Road.

Located at 50 Whiteladies Road (where Pintxo used to be), it’ll be the flagship store for founder Jon Antoniou’s coffee shop brand, serving its signature blend of ethically sourced coffee (Mary-Jane’s Java), which has been developed specifically to infuse with CBD.

Jon, who is South West born and bred, chose Bristol for his new venture because of its dynamic and health- and socially-conscious population.

CBD (cannabidiol) has gained a huge number of users in the last year or so. It’s a naturally occurring substance that – along with over 100 other nutrients – can be extracted from hemp plants. If taken regularly with food and/or drink, it may be able to support the body’s endocannabinoid system, helping to maintain health and balance. Want to learn more about CBD and its effects on the body? There are plenty of articles on rollingpaper.com that give some more info.

Jon says, “Having tried various CBD products on the market I felt that there must be a better way to take it daily than on its own. CBD tends to have a really earthy taste which frankly isn’t very appetising, but infused with a Mary-Jane’s coffee it tastes amazing!”

Along with the coffees, Mary-Jane’s will be serving a range of locally made cakes and other treats, with a focus on catering to the health-conscious, vegans and those with other dietary restrictions. There’ll also be plenty for non-coffee drinkers, with a range of shakes and smoothies that can be infused with CBD if desired.

Jon adds, “It’s believed that an estimated 300,000 people in the UK are already regularly taking CBD supplements, the majority of which are purchased online. Given the current unregulated nature of the industry, it can be really difficult for people to have confidence in what they’re buying. Some CBD products on the market have been tested and found to contain THC, which is the other major compound found in the cannabis plant and which is responsible for giving a ‘high’. At Mary-Jane’s we are proud that our products are independently laboratory tested and found to contain no THC.”

As well as giving people a reliable, affordable and flavourful way to take CBD daily, Jon’s hoping to create a place for customers to meet and share their knowledge and experiences of using CBD.

“We wanted to ensure that we were approaching this responsibly from the outset”, says shop manager Jazz Prince. “You can see this in everything we do in our shop, from our ethical product sourcing and plant-based compostable take away cups, to our energy suppliers who power our coffee machines with 100% renewable electricity. Sustainability has always been at the forefront of our decision making so that we are all striving to look after not only our customers but our planet as well.”

It’s not the first place in Bristol to offer CBD-infused drinks – Mr Lahey’s on Picton Street is already doing just that. But to have a coffee shop whose entire focus is around CBD? That’s something different for Bristol, and it’s going to be good to see how they fare!
