We finally made it to Beach Street Felixstowe a few weeks back. It’s an exciting shopping and dining destination housed in upcycled shipping containers, with an impressive array of dining options.
I’ve a bit of a weakness for a good mac and cheese, so of course, Say Cheese Felixstowe was on my radar. Owner Sarah Hiorns opened the venue in early 2024 to great acclaim, serving up pasta with a blend of Cheddar, Red Leicester and Gouda and a variety of different toppings. There’s a vegan option, too, as well as their take on raclette and a selection of drinks.
TikTok star Food Review Club visited Say Cheese Felixstowe in summer 2025 and gave the place a rave review. Our verdict? A little more muted.
The top food hygiene rating displayed in the window is always a good sign. The rest of the frontage was a bit unappealing. The menus behind the counter are beautifully designed, but the stack of catering-sized boxes of macaroni doesn’t give the place much kerb appeal.
Still, ordering from Say Cheese Felixstowe was easy. We received a buzzer to take to our table that would alert us when our food was ready for collection.
At £10 each for a regular portion with toppings (£12.50 for a large), the prices seemed pretty standard for a lunch option.
Unsurprisingly, it wasn’t long until the buzzer sounded, and it was good to see that the containers came with lids so I could stack and carry them more easily!
We’d chosen a Bacon & Blue (with bacon and blue cheese) and a D OH Double G (with hot dogs, yellow mustard, ketchup and crispy onions) – which would you go for?
You can tell how full the containers were by how squished the blue cheese looks in the photos!
The toppings were genuinely great. The Bacon & Blue was generous with both bacon and blue cheese, the pair adding a beautifully deep, salty flavour to the mac and cheese base. Once I’d got through the mound of crispy onions on the D OH Double G, I discovered plenty of thickly-sliced frankfurter chunks – and a liberal application of both American mustard and ketchup.
In both cases, the flavour profiles of the toppings complemented the pasta and sauce nicely – the Say Cheese Felixstowe team have picked some great flavour combos!
But what about the mac and cheese itself…? Well, the pasta was perfectly cooked and still had a bit of bite to it. We had high expectations for the sauce with its three-cheese blend, but we left a little disappointed.
We live in the age of the cheese pull – and when a brand’s website proudly proclaims, “there is no such thing as too much cheese“, you’d expect the dish to be super-cheesy. Sadly, this wasn’t the case: the sauce was fairly thin and just about coated the pasta, and the majority of the flavour came from the toppings.
Say Cheese Felixstowe is a great concept with some clever flavour combinations – and it’s great that they’ve created an offering for their dairy-free customers, too. However, for us it was the toppings that were the stars of the show, with the mac and cheese itself not quite hitting the mark.
