Tucked deep within the heart of Thetford Forest, the village of Santon Downham has a population of just around 240 people. It may be tiny, but this peaceful village is a magnet for walkers, hikers, horse riders and even wild swimmers, all drawn by the surrounding forest and the tranquil beauty of the Little Ouse. If you’re feeling adventurous, the wild swimming spot at St Helen’s Picnic Site is well worth seeking out.
But Santon Downham has another surprise up its sleeve. Brew & Bloom is a gorgeous little tea garden that genuinely is a hidden gem. Open Friday to Sunday during the warmer months, I only found out about it by chance when I stumbled across their Instagram feed – and I’m so glad I did.
Look out for the pink gate and blackboard on Mark Lane, just up from the Forestry Commission offices. Step through that gate and you’ll find yourself in a beautifully designed, secluded garden, where tea, coffee and cakes are served from a charming retro caravan. It’s cash-only, and there are no ATMs in the village, so make sure you’re sorted before you arrive.
The owners are absolutely lovely: warm, welcoming, and genuinely interested in how you discovered Brew & Bloom. Once you’ve ordered, find yourself a seat and relax while everything is brought over to you.
We chose a metal table with comfortable, cushioned seating towards the back of the garden. There’s plenty to catch your eye while you wait, from decorations hanging in the trees to quirky statues dotted around the space. The garden is full of life. With bees and butterflies drifting between the flowers, and conversation punctuated with birdsong from every direction, it’s the perfect spot for nature lovers.
My latte was decent enough, but the carrot cake was fantastic. Gluten-free, wonderfully moist, and generously topped with cream cheese frosting, I’d happily order this again.
What really adds to the charm of Brew & Bloom, though, is the atmosphere. The other visitors were just as friendly as the hosts – we even picked up some great recommendations for other days out from a lady at the table next to ours. We really did have the feeling that we’d stumbled into something special: a gorgeous spot in an otherwise quiet corner of the forest that’s enjoyed by both locals and visitors alike.
Brew & Bloom is more than just a coffee stop: it’s a haven of tranquillity in a totally unexpected location. If you’re out walking, exploring or wild swimming in the area, make sure you stop by and support them. Places like this deserve every success.
