We think we might just have found the most retro tearoom in Suffolk.
Stepping into Old Joe’s Tea Room in Great Cornard, Sudbury, felt like travelling back a couple of decades. Plastic floral tablecloths cover the tables, old metal advertising signs line the walls, artificial flowers fill every corner and the vintage crockery adds even more nostalgic charm.
Even the pricing seems all wrong for 2026. In this climate, where else in Suffolk can you get a slice of cake for £3, a cup of tea for £1.50, a toastie for under a fiver and even a JD and Coke for £4.50?
Old Joe’s Tea Room sits on the same site as Suffolk Adventure Golf, so we popped in for a quick and easy lunch after an hour or so on the crazy golf course. It’s actually a great set-up for families, with plenty of space, lots of outdoor seating and an extensive children’s menu offering everything from more substantial hot meals to lighter bites.
Our son went for the £5.75 lunchbox option, which included a choice of ham, cheese or jam sandwich, as well as a packet of crisps, a chocolate bar and either fruit juice, a can of fizzy drink or water. The fact that he was able to pick Walkers Crisps and a Wagon Wheel made it feel even better value for money. Another retro touch here, too – remember those drinks that came in little plastic cups, where you had to poke through the film on top with a straw? They’re one of the options available at Old Joe’s Tea Room!
Across the table, the tuna melt toastie (£5.75) arrived generously filled, perfectly toasted and served with a handful of crisps (and look at that retro plate!)
Meanwhile, my cheese ploughman’s (£8.75) also continued the retro theme perfectly. The menu simply described it as a “cheese ploughman’s”, with no info about what was included, but what turned up was gloriously old-school.
Plate one came piled with grated Cheddar, salad, boiled new potatoes, a pork pie, pickled onions and a small pot of pickle. Then, out came sliced and buttered brown bread, plus a huge pot of coleslaw made with salad cream rather than mayonnaise, which felt entirely in keeping with the whole vibe of the place.
Our trip to Old Joe’s Tea Room ended up being a very affordable lunch stop, and somewhere with real personality. Service was friendly throughout, if a little slow at times (the kitchen team needed a gentle reminder to bring out the bread for the ploughman’s), but the relaxed atmosphere and the novelty of the place meant it didn’t feel like too much of an issue.
With plenty of outdoor seating and the milkshakes on the menu already tempting our son, we’re pretty sure we’ll be back at Old Joe’s Tea Room after another visit to Suffolk Adventure Golf.
