**Please note: Blue Fig invited me in, and paid for our food and drink. This in no way impacted my opinion. I was not obliged to write a positive review, and Blue Fig didn’t see this review before I published it.**

When a restaurant opens a second venue just a year and a half after launch, you know they’re doing something right. That’s the case with Blue Fig on Bury St Edmunds’ Abbeygate Street: a cosy restaurant that serves up Mediterranean-inspired small plates. It first opened in early 2024, and since early July 2025, their second restaurant in Woodbridge has been enticing diners with the same offering of sharing plates and a carefully curated drinks menu, including cocktails and an impressive wine selection.

With the bifold doors at the front thrown open to embrace the early summer sunshine, Blue Fig had very much a continental vibe on the day of our visit. It’s only a small place, seating around 30 downstairs, but there are also private dining spaces upstairs. Despite its size, its elegant decor and its gentle buzz – as well as our seats by the window (perfect for people-watching) – excited us for the meal ahead.

A bowl of plump, juicy and flavourful Gordal olives (£4.50) whetted our appetites for what was to come.

We ordered two dishes from the Small Plates section of the menu to share. First up was the asparagus (£9), perhaps one of the final times it was to appear on the menu before the season ended.

Cooked to retain a decent bite, it was paired with a pine nut, caper & anchovy butter that added a pleasant bitterness and a salty tang. Finished with a generous sprinkle of Parmesan, it was a great dish to showcase this seasonal vegetable.

Accompanying the asparagus to the table, the hash browns (£6). I could happily have ordered a second plate of these. The tender, very finely shredded potato had been shaped into blocks that were beautifully crisp on the outside. Topped with a silky smooth confit garlic aioli and sitting on a bed of tangy bravas sauce, they had been showered with grated Manchego to finish. Not your average hash brown, by any means.

The Blue Fig lunch menu features a variety of flatbreads – and having seen photos on their Instagram feed, we happily ordered the wild mushroom flatbread (£13) to share.

Texturally, the dish was incredible. It featured a range of mushroom varieties piled atop a generous spreading of soft ricotta and was finished with Parmesan, pine nuts, truffle oil and rocket. The homemade dough was chewy, salty and delicious. Well worth a try.

Our final savoury choice was the market fish of the day (£21), on this occasion, plaice. Served à la meunière, its light dredging of flour added a beautiful golden colour and the fish was lovely and tender.

The plaice was paired with a tarragon-spiked butter and segments of fresh grapefruit: a combination that could be overpowering but instead offered a gentle citrus flavour. The lemon wedges really weren’t needed at all; the flavours were beautiful. The crunchy samphire and a variety of shoots added both texture and extra visual appeal: a stunning dish.

We shared a dessert: the Basque cheesecake with strawberries and pistachio (£8). Dense and creamy, the slight sour notes of the cheesecake itself paired perfectly with the bitterness of the crushed pistachios and the sweet, juicy strawberries. Delicious.

Refined and refreshingly relaxed, our meal at Blue Fig in Bury St Edmunds was beautiful from start to finish. From its thoughtfully-curated menu to its warm setting and attentive and friendly service, it’s a place I’ll happily revisit, maybe in the evening next time to check out the vibe. We’re looking forward to visiting the team’s Woodbridge restaurant, too!
