Is the Asda Kids Eat For £1 deal any good?

Lunch out – with drinks – for two for £7.70? That’s Asda price!

During the school holidays, many restaurants and pub chains offer free – or heavily discounted – kids’ meals with a certain amount of adult spend.

At Asda cafes, though, the “kids eat for £1” deal is available all year round, and with no adult spend required.

At a time when the cost of living is so high, deals like this can be a literal lifesaver for many families. In a bid to keep the costs down during the summer holidays, the seven-year-old and I headed over to check the offer out.

In Bury St Edmunds, the Asda Cafe is upstairs at the back of the store, with views across the supermarket. Having never been into the cafe area before, I was seriously surprised by the low pricing of adult meals, let alone the kids’ menu.

There are various breakfast offerings before 12pm, and at lunchtimes you can enjoy jacket potatoes (from £3.08); rolls, wraps and salad boxes for £4.95, and even hot meals like a katsu curry, lasagne or fish, chips and mushy peas, all under £8.

The kids eat for £1 deal at Asda offers plenty of variety, making it suitable for the pickiest of eaters. There’s a cold pick and mix selection with sandwiches, snacks and various drinks to choose from, as well as a hot food menu offering jacket potatoes and other more substantial meals.

The seven-year-old chose a bottle of flavoured water as his drink. His original plan was to order a half jacket potato with cheese and beans, but we discovered the Asda cafe had run out of cheese.

“Can’t they just go downstairs and buy cheese from the supermarket?”, asked the child? I can understand his thinking! We were surprised at the lack of cheese – especially during the school holidays – but luckily he was happy to order a plate of chicken nuggets, chips and beans instead.

“I thought it was amazing”, he says. “The chicken nuggets were yummy and I liked the taste of the chips.”

While he was enjoying his £1 meal, I was tucking into a jacket potato with tuna mayo (£4.58), served with a side salad, and a bottle of Coke Zero for £2.12. The salad tasted nice and fresh and that jacket potato was absolutely loaded, the tuna mixture nice and creamy. The jacket itself was soft in the middle, but had that taste of having been sat in a heated cabinet for a while after cooking. Can’t complain for the price, though.

£7.70 for our two meals and two drinks was insanely good value. The most important thing is that the child enjoyed his meal, and he’s said he’d happily go back! If we have another trip to Planet Laser (just next to Asda, where we had a game of mini bowling and played in the amusement arcades beforehand), I’d be happy to take us back to the Asda cafe for a £1 lunch deal in the future.
