Why you need to visit West Stow Country Park

Spread the love

If you’re looking for an easy day out in Suffolk that combines nature, history, great walks and fun places for kids to burn off energy, West Stow Country Park should definitely be on your list.

Set just outside Bury St Edmunds, this 125-acre park has a bit of everything: woodland trails, riverside walks, wildlife, picnic spots, a great playground and one of the most unusual historical attractions in Suffolk. Whether it’s a full day out or just a few hours to stretch your legs, West Stow Country Park has something for every season.

Here are six reasons why I think the place is worth a visit.

1. The walks are perfect for families

One of my favourite things about West Stow Country Park is how easy it is to explore – and how it’s possible to see a different part of the park every time you visit. There are several marked walking routes through woodland, heathland, around the lake and along the river, with options suitable for shorter family strolls as well as longer walks.

The scenery changes beautifully as you walk around the park: one minute you’re in woodland, the next you’re out on open heathland or strolling beside the River Lark. There are plenty of benches and picnic spots along the routes, too, which is ideal if you’re travelling with younger children or those with limited mobility.

If you have kids who love to explore, make sure to pick up a Beowulf and Grendel Trail pack from the shop before you set off. The pack includes a postcard, puzzles, colouring sheets, a rune translation sheet and a trail map giving you an interactive walk inspired by the famous Anglo-Saxon story. Along the route, children can follow clues, spot carved sculptures and read the information boards to hear more about the legendary tale while exploring West Stow. It adds an extra sense of adventure, and ties in perfectly with the site’s Anglo-Saxon history.

An added bonus is the sandy Breckland soil throughout the park, which makes West Stow Country Park far less muddy than many other Suffolk walks during the rainier months.

2. The Anglo-Saxon Village

Lots of country parks have nice walks. Not many have a reconstructed Anglo-Saxon village in the middle of them. Excavation of the site began in 1956, and reconstruction in the 70s – and in 1999, it opened to the public.

It’s a chance to gain insight into what life was like between AD420 and AD650, and also includes a museum, archaeology displays and more.

3. There’s plenty of space for kids to burn off energy

West Stow Country Park not only has walking routes and kids’ trails, it also has plenty of open green space for picnics and games. There’s a giant wooden dragon’s head buried in a huge mound, where children love clambering about, too.

There’s also a fantastic playground, with elements to suit all ages, including an enclosed slide and a separate climbing wall for older kids.

Because the site is so spread out, it rarely feels cramped, even on busy days – whether it’s the playground or the park itself, it’s easy to find a space to burn off some energy.

4. There are great facilities

At the road-end of the car park, you’ll find a small toilet block, perfectly located for the start and the end of your day. Head through the car park and you’ll find two raised buildings with both stairs and a ramp to access them.

The first is the building that serves as the entrance to the Anglo-Saxon Village, the museum and the shop. The shop’s well worth a visit in its own right, with plenty of educational items as well as soft toys, souvenirs and more. Check out the monster’s lair just inside the door, too!

At the top of the ramp is Grounds Cafe – the same cafe operators you’ll find in the Abbey Gardens and Nowton Park. There’s a great choice of food and drink, including plenty of seasonal drink specials (their pistachio cookie frappe is delicious!) and their homemade gelato, with plenty of flavours to choose from.

There’s plenty of seating both inside and out and it’s dog-friendly, too, with handmade dog biscuits and sausage-flavoured dog ice cream on the menu. There are more toilets inside the cafe building, too, and some great birdwatching opportunities through the windows.

5. It’s great for wildlife spotting

On our most recent visit to West Stow Country Park, we spotted butterflies, various birds (and heard a cuckoo), dragonflies and a muntjac. Depending on what time of year you go, there’s all sorts of wildlife you can spot! With bird hides, feeding areas, woodland habitats, the lake and the River Lark, it’s a place that attracts all sorts of creatures big and small, and it’s fun seeing what you can spot when you visit.

6. It’s a very affordable Suffolk day out

We’re spoilt for choice when it comes to days out in Suffolk! West Stow Country Park, though, is a very affordable option.

The country park itself is free to enter, and even parking is reasonable – £2 for up to 2 hours, or £3 for over 2 hours. Alternatively, see if there’s a free parking space available on the opposite site of the road to the park and save yourself a few pounds! You can easily bring a picnic and drinks and spend most of the day here without spending much money at all.

The Anglo-Saxon Village is ticketed, but again, prices are not bad: £7.50 for an adult ticket, £4.50 for kids. Alternatively, for just £15.50 and £9 respectively, you can buy an annual ticket that gives you access to both the Anglo-Saxon Village and Moyses Hall in Bury St Edmunds, which may be worth doing if you plan on visiting either regularly!

West Stow Country Park is a great place for a family day out, with a variety of landscapes to explore, fun trails, wildlife, family-friendly facilities, a great historical attraction and a decent playground. It’s somewhere that will appeal to people of all ages and with all different interests, which can be hard to find! If you’ve not yet visited, I highly recommend a trip.
